A record breaker

March 24, 2008

Check out this record-breaking train station…

The longest station name in Japan

So what record does it hold? Find out after the jump!

It’s not the smallest. It’s not the remotest. It’s certainly not the only one inside a volcanic crater.

Want a clue? This little station on the picturesque rail line through Kyushu’s famous Mt. Aso volcanic caldera is called 南阿蘇水の生まれる里白水高原 (or Minamiasomizunoumarerusatohakusuikougen).

The longest station name in Japan

And as such is the proud holder of the title 日本一長い駅名 – “Longest train station name in Japan”.

I prefer Narushima – the end of the line .

There is nothing beyond that – except the mountains and Kusatsu.

“So what record does it hold”? I was going to make some intelligent guess but, accidentally holding the cursor over the picture, it actually tells you the name you’ve given to the photograph!! Spoiled all my fun!!
Is this longer than LLanfairpwhllyngwithwhyndrobwithllantisiliogogogoch (Thats my own guess, from memory – not bad, but its actually Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!)?

No, I think the Welsh one is the world’s longest. Wouldn’t attempt it without cut ‘n paste, myself. 😉
