Havant you heard?
The FA Cup 4th round is the weekend after next, and now that the dust has settled on the third round replays, we can see that Liverpool will host… Havant & Waterlooville.
I tired of the chopping and changing of the names of divisions and trophies in English football long ago, and have resisted any temptation to memorise the names and logos of fickle sponsors since about 1985. Which leaves me never having heard of the Blue Square Conference South. But a lot of the media talk after H&W’s third round replay win last night was of “making a mockery of the 83 places which separated them and Swansea”.
Liverpool are in the fourth round courtesy of their 5-0 rout of Luton the night before having previously been held to a draw. These bipolar displays, flurries of goals one week, followed by interviews in which a grim-faced Rafa repeats “We made lots of chances, but couldn’t take them” the week after, seem now to be the pattern of this season.
